01 / The manual method
Check the character and world tabs separately
Version 1.0 separates local saves from the Steam Cloud folder. A character found under one tab does not tell you which tab contains the world you want.
- In character selection, check Local and Steam Cloud and find the character you used before.
- After selecting the character, check both source tabs again in world selection.
- If the missing world belongs to a friend’s host or a dedicated server, ask the host to check it. A character loading normally does not show that the server world is intact.
Still missing a character? Check the migration update
One migration problem has changed across the first 1.0 hotfixes. Version 1.0.0.2 skipped corrupted characters to avoid a crash while loading them. That could leave a character absent from the list.
The 1.0.0.3 update released on 21 October addresses a case involving invalid items in extra backpack slots. Affected characters should now migrate, leaving out the items that blocked the process. Keep your existing save files first, then install at least this update and check the original character again.
This particular fix is for character migration. If the character is present but the world is absent, keep checking the world source and the host’s files rather than treating it as the same problem.
Find the active folder and make a complete copy
%USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\keen games\Enshrouded\defaultFor a local save, press Win + R, paste this path and press Enter. %USERPROFILE% automatically expands to the current Windows user folder.
If you use the Steam Cloud tab, inspect your Steam installation’s userdata folder and the existing account folder. The table lists both locations; keep separate copies if you are still working out which one you use.
- Save and exit the game normally. For a server world, the host should stop the server cleanly before copying.
- Copy the complete active save folder to a backup folder elsewhere. Replace <Steam> and <account> with your own installation and existing account directory when following the Steam path.
- Use a name such as Enshrouded_2026-10-22_before-house-rebuild_local. Include the world name and host if you keep several worlds.
Scroll the table sideways on small screens.
| Where you play | Folder to check |
|---|---|
| Local | %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\keen games\Enshrouded\default |
| Steam Cloud files on this PC | <Steam>\userdata\<account>\1203620\remote |
| Dedicated server world | The host’s configured saveDirectory; default ./savegame |
Restore the right copy and check the base
Choose the retained copy that actually contains the world and milestone you want. Keep the current complete folder separately before restoring it; this lets you return to today’s state if you chose the wrong copy.
These steps restore the whole directory. If it also contains other characters or worlds, their files return to the backed-up state too.
Version 1.0 changed the save format. It backs up detected saves from version 0.8 or earlier before migrating them. Keep files from before and after that conversion separately; an old guide that edits hexadecimal filenames or an -index file should not be applied to 1.0 without checking its format.
A local folder called remote is not proof that a separate cloud copy is safe. If neither your PC nor the host has the old progress, installing a backup tool now will not recreate it.
- Close the game and Steam. Restore the complete retained copy to the same source and folder it came from. For a server, the host restores it through the current hosting procedure at saveDirectory.
- If Steam shows a cloud conflict, compare the two copies with the milestone you intend to restore. The newest timestamp may be the later progress you are deliberately rolling back. Keep your retained copy while working out which version to use.
- On relaunch, select that source tab and world. Inspect the building you want back and a storage chest whose contents you remember.
- Save normally, exit and load the world once more. Keep both copies until the expected state survives that second load.
02 / The SaveNest workflow
Detect the save, enable backups, keep a way back
Once you have found the correct source, keep “before rebuilding the house” and “roof finished” as separate permanent saves. Use the timeline for recent changes. For a dedicated server, the host must still retain the world files.
Keep SaveNest running for automatic checks and confirm automation is enabled for this game. The interval is a check schedule, not a guarantee that each tick produces a new distinct save. Busy or changing files may require another attempt; inspect visible failures.
- Find the exact game and edition in SaveNest. Enable backup and review the detected save location and player account. If nothing is found, confirm the game has created a save and resolve detection before continuing.
- Finish the in-game save, exit normally and wait for launcher transfers. Choose Back up now. Stay on the result until success or an actionable error appears; enabling automation alone does not prove a copy exists.
- Turn on Auto backup for this game and choose a backup interval. Keep SaveNest running; check the timeline for a successful backup after your progress changes.
Scroll the table sideways on small screens.
| Task | Manual method | With SaveNest |
|---|---|---|
| Find the active save | Look up the path and identify the account folder yourself. | Detect supported games and save locations; confirm the matching account once. |
| Keep several versions | Remember to copy, date and organize each backup. | Enable automatic backups for timeline history; keep important milestones in the permanent library. |
